We’re often taken aback when we observe certain individuals exhibit habits or behaviours we thought they were incapable of. But if we consider that these individuals often did not just wake up and change, we might understand the phenomenon.
“Harmless” compromises are the inception that culminate at the very behaviour or habit that shocks us. It all begins with one compromise which the individual takes for granted. “It’s just this time”. “It won’t happen again”. Well, until it’s happening for the 2nd, 3rd and even 5th time. Until the mind “normalises” the action.
As the popular folk saying goes, action can become habits, and when habits are entertained long enough, they become character.
Chronic liars are most likely not born chronic liars. A “little” lie here and there, and then boom, a habit manifests!
The takeaway? Understanding this pattern will be useful in avoiding falling prey to the snare of little actions that metamorphose into deviant habits.
